Not gonna lie, reading a book that everybody is in love with is great. It’s easy to jump into a discussion, awesome to hear that other people share your feels, and it just makes you feel included. BUT! Never underestimate the power of a not-so-popular novel! (Even though I most definitely do sometimes.) Here are seven reasons why I love underrated reads:
1. YOU ARE A TRAILBLAZING PONY THAT’S PRETTY COOL
Go you, you fabulous pioneer! Because when that book gets popular (and if it’s that awesome you know it will) you get to say how you read it before it hit the mainstream.
2. YOU GET A SPECIAL TREASURE ALL TO YOURSELF
Well, not all to yourself of course. But come on, who doesn’t love that fuzzy feeling you get when you realize you just experienced something that not many people have experienced? It’s like finding buried treasure.
3. OR YOU GET TO SHARE YOUR TREASURE
You get to recommend this book to your friends or your followers. You get to spread the word that this book is awesome and everyone in the world should read it. Which brings us back to number one – you are a trend setter!
4. YOU ARE SUPPORTING A LESSER-KNOWN AUTHOR
Not only that, I personally have been able to connect with lesser-known authors on social media which definitely
made me squeal like a 4-year old and dance around adds to the experience of reading that author’s work!
5. NO FEAR THAT THE BOOK IS A VICTIM OF HYPE
It’s natural. When I book gets read so much, the hype becomes larger than the book itself. Which SUCKS. It happens to me ALL THE TIME. *cough The Mortal Instruments and Divergent cough*. I really wanted to love these books. But they were hyped up so much for me that I went in expecting way too much and was understandably disappointed. It’s no one’s fault. These books were just a victim of the hype.
6. ZERO PRESSURE TO ENJOY THE BOOK
Kind of like the last reason, reading a popular book unknowingly puts pressure on you to love it like everyone else loves it. With under-hyped books, there is no stress to love or hate the book.
7. THAT BOOK WAS AMAZINGLY AWESOME
Just because it’s unpopular doesn’t mean it isn’t awesome. UNDERHYPED BOOKS CAN BE INCREDIBLE. Some of my favorite books are under-hyped ones. Sure some of them, like with any book, are going to disappoint you, but if you find the right one, it’s just the best feeling in the world.
While I have the utmost respect for Harry Potter and Throne of Glass, mixing it up with some underrated books is pretty great, too.
Some of my under-hyped favorites are:
Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon
This Raging Light by Estelle Laure
Elusion by Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam
Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis
Alienated by Melissa Landers
Add them to your Goodreads!
