May hit me like a truck, you guys.
This year, I’ve managed to be pretty active on this blog, which I’m really proud of. For the most part, I’ve kept to a blogging schedule, even during the busy weeks, and managed to post consistently.
Unfortunately, all of that came to a screeching halt this month.
I know why it happened. The first two weeks of May I spent taking AP exams (shout out to all the high schoolers out there! We did it!), the last two weeks of May, I spent studying for regular exams, finishing up school assignments, wrapping up the school year and honestly… sleeping.
I wasn’t reading. I wasn’t blogging.
And while I absolutely missed blogging, and don’t plan on going anywhere, I have to say… it felt really good.
As much as reading and blogging are joyful parts of my life, they are still work, particularly blogging. It’s a commitment. It’s a hobby that doesn’t do my homework or send me any paychecks. Because of that, it has to take a backseat sometimes so I can focus on other things in my life.
Like schoolwork, or extracurriculars. Or writing, or reading, or sleeping, or just… having fun. Hanging out with my friends, going to the movies, spending an entire day at the beach. I’m teaching myself that it’s good to want to do other fun things before wanting to blog all the time.
Does this mean I don’t absolute love this blog and all of you for supporting it? Absolutely not! I still adore writing on here, gushing about books, documenting my thoughts.
I’m more just trying to convey that if you, like me, find yourself wanting to step away from blogging for a bit, then know that I support that. In fact, I encourage it. I promise, the world won’t forget about you because you don’t post for a couple of weeks, or months. I won’t forget about you.
The same goes with reading. The past few weeks, I haven’t felt like reading very much. So guess what? I didn’t read. Yes, I leaned into the slump. I watched a bunch of booktube, caught up on some of my favorite shows, lounged around my house, and didn’t read. My brain needed that break after what feels like the longest school year of my life.
Junior year was great, but it also kicked my butt a little, and I was worn out. And again, that’s okay. We have times when we’re busy, when we’re tired, when we just don’t want to read, and that doesn’t make you less of a reader, less of a blogger, less of an anything. That makes you human.
Now, that being said, I did finish my first book in almost five weeks (woah, five weeks) the other night! Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren was so much better than I expected. I thought it would be a simple palette cleanser to get back into reading but I ended up falling in love with the characters and will definitely look out for more from this author!
In conclusion, this is a bit of an I’m back + reading update + you are valid, post. It’s okay to step back and give some time to yourself. You don’t owe the internet anything. I promise.
Anyway, I’ll see you guys again soon for regular programming.
Do you ever take blogging/reading hiatuses? How do they make you feel? Good? Bad? Somewhere in between? Tell me in the comments! 🙂
