It happens to the best of us.
We can be blinded by a fantastic ending, or a swoony character, and rate a book just a smidge higher than it deserves. At times… much higher.
I’ve run into this problem many times myself. I find Younger Jordyn did this a lot because she was just so excited to be reading YA that every book seemed worthy of five stars! Alas! Such is not the case.
One of my reading resolutions in 2019 was to be more critical in my reviews and ratings (look out for a discussion post on this soon!), and I figured a good way to do that would be to look at my ratings in the past few years and see how many of them I would really change.
These are some titles that, well, seemed like five star reads at the time, but in hindsight… yikes. Perhaps they weren’t as good as I previously thought.

Romance is a pretty big deal in YA.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that almost all YA books have some sort of romantic subplot. So what happens when those couples get shaken up a little bit?
Yeah, sure, Valentine’s Day could be used to celebrate all the great couples that we already have… or the ones that we could have if we only thought outside of the box (or rather, the book.)
I was inspired by this Epic Reads post where you could vote on which character ships from different universes you think would work and which ones wouldn’t.
But since this isn’t a democracy in any way, shape, or form (lucky you), I wanted to list some crossover couples of my own that would swim and others that would sink to the bottom of the ocean, Titanic-style.

Don’t act like you’ve never imagined it – you totally have.
Do we all have our reading spots at home that are familiar to us? That we know and love? Of course we do. But, that does not discredit the fact that we have all dreamed of that perfect little nook – so custom made, it basically has your name carved into the side (depending on your aesthetic of course).

I’m not really an Oscars type of person. Celebrities, Hollywood… just not what I’m interested in. But, do you know what I am interested in? BOOKS! Shocking, right?
So if any of you bibliophiles like me are out there, and decided to ditch the Oscars this year, I’ve created a bookish one for you!

We all know that 2016 wasn’t the best year for our great Earth, and I think most of the population is ready to greet 2017 with weary, yet hopeful hearts.
But, as the saying goes, “I cried because I had no shoes until I saw a man that had no feet.” Downer, I know, but it’s my inspiration for this post! While 2016 was sort of a disaster there are a lot of book characters that probably had worse years than you did. These aren’t necessarily book characters that had a bad year this year, because some of these books weren’t published this year but… you get the picture.

BEFORE THIS POST BEGINS, I’d just like to say THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR 50 FOLLOWERS! I got the notification last week and totally forgot to post about it! I can’t believe there are actually 50 (56, now) of you that actually think my ramblings are somewhat interesting. Thank you, thank you, thank you. A special thanks to Kat from Life and Other Disasters for being my 50th AND to Yarravy from Hiraeth For The Pages for featuring me on her blog, which definitely added a few followers to my tally!
Now onto the slump in question.

I was in the process of writing a sequel to my 10 Books in 10 Words post when I thought, “Hey, you know what would be cool?? 10 Books in 10 Words, but with the Harry Potter books!” And you know what? That would be cool, so here it is.

We’ve all been there. You’re browsing through your Goodreads, maybe rating a book you just finished, and you scroll down to the bottom (for mobile users) or glance to the right (for non-mobile users). You guessed it, I’m talking about that enticing little heading titled Readers Also Enjoyed. You think to yourself, “Eh, what the hey? That huge English paper isn’t due ’til tomorrow, so I’ve got plenty of time to procrastinate!”
You click on a cover that looks mildly interesting, let’s call it Book A, and you read the blurb. Then you’re like “Hmm that sounds like a delicious plot right there, maybe I should get Book A right-” and then you see it. Published [insert month] 2017. Twenty-who-now?!?!

Are you ever wondering if you should by a book and thinking, “Man, I think I’d like this book, but maybe I’d like it more if Jordyn gave me a ten word recommendation/review on it”? Of course you have, Imaginary Reader Inside My Head! Say no more!
I picked some random books off my shelf that I’ve read, and tried to write what I thought about them in ten words, nothing more, and nothing less. The stuff that really stood out for me once I’d finished it. As for spoilers, hmmm, a couple of them are a little spoilery, most are just silly, so I guess my advice is read at your own risk? 10 books, 10 words. Let the travesty begin.
